Rise of Babylon (C64)
A downloadable game
Your father, the King of Babylon, has died unexpectedly, and you inherit his throne. Babylon is a burgeoning little settlement, and after your father gained dominance in the region through successful campaigns, his goal was to make Babylon the most powerful and influential city.
His unexpected death prevents him from carrying out his plans himself. Now it's up to you to make his dream a reality.
About
In Rise of Babylon, your goal is to achieve the greatest possible population growth in the city of Babylon during your reign.
Since space and time are limited, skillful city planning is essential. As king, you will also have to make important decisions. Events and dangerous neighbors will complicate your task.
Requirements
This game was created for the Commodore 64. It can be played on real hardware, or in a C64 emulator like Vice. The complete game is controlled with a joystick.
The game is compatible with both PAL and NTSC.
The game includes German, English, and Polish language versions.
Where to get it?
You can download a digital version of the game and a manual here for free (see downloads below).
A physical version of the game will later be published by the magazine Komoda & Amiga plus.

Very nice game, even if it doesn't have too much replay value. But I really loved my 2-3 playthroughs.
My only gripe is that the game's last phase is not really rewarding. You have this nice city with fountains, markets, temples, small houses, etc; and then you have to replace everything with these big, soulless blocks of flats. Talk about poignant...
Thank you for your feedback. The game focuses on efficiency optimization rather than aesthetics, which I personally prefer :-)
A sequel with a different focus will be released in May. This one will be more rewarding later in the game and might appeal to you more.
Hello, I just posted a little gameplay video on my channel. It is more or less a blind lets play. It´s a really great game, I really liked it. All the best from Magisthan´s Spielekiste. 🙂
Thank you so much for your effort! Great video and I think you did really well :-)
Thanks so much. Maybe you will have a look at the Youtube channel site? There are some question to be answered by the dev. :-)
Very nice strategy game that could perhaps use a bit more variety. Graphically very appealing, but somewhat monotonous in the long run. It's great that German language is also available. Our German-language review can be found at 01:28:05. English subtitles are also available. Subscription to our YouTube and Twitch channel is welcome. 🙂
The game has depth and variety. However, this is difficult to grasp if you only play it briefly and superficially. It's not an action game that you can understand after a minute of fiddling around. I recommend taking a look at the manual; it's not very long and explains all the important aspects. Thanks for trying it out anyway.
Hey there, congrats on the new game. I have placed it in January's best homebrew games video here:
That's an interesting and fun game, thank you very much for programming / releasing it! Runs nicely on my C64U. I actually played it with my 7 year old daughter and it was fun managing Babylon together. There are a few inconsistencies I noticed (like the administration building supposedly earns you 500 / turn according to the description, but in reality only 300 etc.) But all in all, this is fun! We need more games like Rise of Babylon on the C64!! :-)
First of all, thank you very much for your feedback. Perhaps we'll develop a similar game in the future. We already have a rough concept, at least :-) There is indeed a typo in the German version. All other versions and the manual are correct in this case. During final testing and fine-tuning, many values were changed multiple times, and each time the descriptive texts in all three language versions and in the manual had to be updated. However, it is only an incorrect text. The actual values are identical in all versions :-)
very good
Hello, in my last issue of Retro News Flash, I covered the game Rise of Babylon and ran a short report on it. It´s a really great game, I really liked it. All the best from Magisthan´s Spielekiste. 🙂
Very nice report. Thank you :-)
Hey there, I am happy to say that your game has been placed into the best C64 homebrew games of January 2026.
Thank you. We really appreciate it :-)
Well, I'm addict now :)

Can't wait to get the physical version of the game.
Played it on my real C64 and reached 32228 people. Not that bad :)
Thanks for sharing :-) Another hint: If I remember right, you had no harbor in your gameplay video. For most strategies, building a harbor early makes a huge difference in earnings. You need a lot of gold as soon as relative growth (fountains, temples or gardens) becomes more effective than absolute growth (inn).
Ok. Thanks for the information. But I was not rich enough for an harbor. I had a fountain and a temple and some inns to get a better score.
Thanks once again for this addicting game :)
I'm really glad to hear that you like it so much! Thank you so much for your feedback :-)
Very good game, you can never have too many strategy games. I added it to my video along with other games released in January.
Exactly! :-) Thanks for the video!
Very nice game! Nice mechanics, good gfx and very good music!
And its for free!
I made it to more than 53.000 citizens. Why was it still judged as a small settlement?
Constructive suggestions:
Grain could always play a role to feed the people. But there is only one event where you need to have sufficient grain stored. (to feed the people)
It could be an ongoing task to always have enough food for the population or people will starve.
And there could be more different decision incidents.
But dont get me wrong! Its a great game!
Very nice small detail: Your advisor is aging over the years.^^
Thanks for your feedback! It turns out during playtesting, that using grain for both trading and consuming is more confusing than enjoyable. So the feature was reduced to the trading aspect, which makes the game flow more smoothly.
The decisions are fixed, so you can see how different decisions affect the game. The events where added for a little bit of randomness. But I'll keep your suggestion in mind ;-)
60.000 is the first treshold for a better ending.
Good observation. I expected someone to ask why there are four advisors in the game ;-D
Hello.
I recorded a longplay with a not that bad score for my 4th play. Nearly 19 000 people.
Enjoy :)
Thanks for sharing the video. It's always interesting to watch others play our games. Try building more inns at the beginning to boost growth :-)
OK. Thanks for the tip!
Irving Finkel is gonna love this
Well.
I'm not a big city-builder fan, but this game got me. On my first test, I went up to 5279 people. Not bad for a first try :)
Well, nearly 7000 on my second try. Next step? 8000... Or 10 000 :D

There has definitely been some progress :-)
Indeed. And my best score for a long time to go, a little more than 17000.
I love the management and strategy games you guys put out! Thank you for continuing to support the C64!
Thank you. We appreciate your feedback :-)
very good
Thanks :-)
My first play through. I gave it my all, took my last breath as king knowing I left behind a legacy and a metropolis the world had never seen before. Ahem. <ending screen comes up> Ooh ... uh ... I mean a little village with measly 33 thousand people living in it. Dang I could have sworn it looked real impressive and big when I was living there :3. I guess from the outside it must have looked kinda cute! We had temples! We had corn! Come see our stores! Ahaha ... I dunno, maybe my next run there will be movie theatres ...
Movie theaters are unlocked at 250k population. At least I heard so. Never make it beyond 120k myself ;-D
Very nice game! Thx for it.
I'm glad you like it. Thank you for your feedback :-)
Awesome game!
Nice video, thanks !
